Correcting myself I should rather say that Hauptsatz is every
clause that can be a grammatically complete utterance in itself.
Linked by a conjunction, a Hauptsatz can also follow a Hauptsatz.
Example: "Ich spreche Deutsch, und ich lebe in Österreich."
(=I speak german and I live in Austria). In the case of
consecutive main clauses (Hauptsatzkette), a comma separates them
in writing.
Ok, I didn't want to hold a lecture... just help Andreas get my
point. ;-)
Cheers,
Harald
