In German, subordinate clauses can require a change in word
order, making them unable to stand alone:

"Es ist warm, obwohl die Sonne nicht scheint."

The sentence "Die Sonne nicht scheint." is wrong, it must be
"Die Sonne scheint nicht.".  "Obwohl" introduces a Nebensatz,
whereas the similar "doch" demands a Hauptsatz:

"Es ist warm, doch die Sonne scheint nicht."

Note the different word order.
