I saw this the first time 'round and didn't comment, but since you bring
it up again...
I'd double check with a native speaker, but for my money, e accent aigu
as in liberte' *is* pronounced /e/ (though not with the English
offglide), not /E/. You can hear the difference in verb conjugations:
past participle - regarde' /RYgaRde/ vs. imperfect - regardais
/RYgaRdE/. Or fe'e /fe/ fairy vs. fait /fE/ fact. Etc.
