As best as I can tell, a bunch of generally half-black, half-white, but
also pure aboriginal children were taken from their mothers and taken to
foster homes (or the then equivalent rather. Orphanages or something). The
Indigenous Australians were not very pleased with this. It comes up often
because they want the Australian government to apologise (i.e. say sorry).
The current Government* certainly won't, probably because if they do, some
court will take that as an admission of liability and let them sue them.
In fifty years time, our treatment of illegal immigrants/refuges will be
looked upon in a similar light (they get sent to camps with disgusting
conditions and commit suicide for crimes no worse than trying to
illeagally migrate to Australia because if they tried to do it legally,
they would remain in repressive regimes or countries that we helped the US
bomb the shit out of or other similar things because there's no actual way
of getting over here legally. One particular camp is in a region that
would be more well-known to Brits** as quite near the place they did
nuclear testing here). Some Europeans have probably heard of the Tampa;
that is related to this. Disgusting little country we are.
*In this sense, Government appears to be used in a similar way to how
Americans use Administration.
** Not that you necessarily know the place, but if you do, that's probably
why.
