Pedantry, eh? You scamp. AHD agrees with the usage for "sex", and
even notes the usage is growing. Websters calls it "obsolete" for
"sex". WordNet agrees with the usage, with no comments on frequency
or currency. Draw from that whatever conclusions you're able to.

I know it would have been pronounced that way. I was trying to find a
way of spelling it that wouldn't be confused with the plural of
"base". I failed, and thus the obvious and marked misspelling.
