i have only one syllable for each of those words... i don't know
whether thats correct or not but i suspect it has more to do with the
way my parents pronounce things than what i learned in school... of
course i have a propensity to pronounce 'tread' as /trid/ no matter
how often my mother and sister tell me i'm wrong...
