- If i remember correctly, Diane Duane invented a non-canonical Romulan language ("Rihannsu"?) for her Star Trek novels about Romulans. The Romulans who left Vulcan to become Romulans conlanged their new language into existance by going back to some Vulcan proto-language and making an a-posteriori new language based on it, but very different from the Vulcan languages of their time.
