This is common in USA. At least it was back in the 1980s.
Usually in the "historical" present.

 It took ten-minutes for the damn things to die
    and I go, “Can I put on the lid?”
   And she goes, “No, it ruins it.”
   and then the other girl goes, “This is horrifying.”
