"What could be used instead" would probably be
called "do". Maybe it's a (pro-)verb, or an auxiliary,
or an affix (like Japanese _suru_ in your examples).
In any case, if there were no verb "do" to be used
more or less as in English, another verb (or grammar
artifact) would surely fill in its space.
