Not a very meaningful sentence though, I imagine... it's kind of an odd fiction
anyway[1], since nothing *does* separate the blue from the white--they are
contiguous.
You sort of have to invent the border here to talk about it.
Now if it were a different kind of sentence, like,
"He cut the flag along the border that separates the blue from the white"
you could rethrow that sentence as
"He cut the flag between the blue and the white"
And I imagine a lot if not most similar sentences could be thus recast.
