I know plenty of men who use emoticons frequently.  I myself, when
chatting (tho not e-mails for some reason) have a tendency to use
smileys alot.

Of course, there's also a rather sizable male majority on this list, so
if one assumes that an individual is male, it's probably safer than
assuming they're female, as you have a higher likelihood of being
correct.
