I like to think of it as all those possible universes out there, that sometimes sentients from one can sort of percieve what's happening in another. So fiction authors can "pick up" on characters and plots, and we conlangers can "pick up" on languages and cultures that have never existed in our world. I'm a strong believer in "ground truth" -- that there is a real world and a real universe regardless of whether I'm around to perceive it, or whether *any* humans are around to perceive it. So if my above line of thought was correct, then the beings who speak my conlangs just go about their normal lives, whether or not I'm "tuned in" and "watching" (or "listening"?) to them.
