Ah. That's me being a bit careless. [strident], strictly speaking, is the feature
which distinguishes sibilants from non-sibilants; sibilants are [+strident].
Sibilants are characterized by high frequency noise (ca 10MHz) and include
[s,z,S,Z,tS,dZ]. Chomsky and Halle (1968) also define [f,v] as [+strident]
because they are characterized by more turbulent noise (than [T,D], but they
are not sibilants.
Not everyone likes or uses the feature [strident] since its motivation is acoustic
rather than articulatory; it plays a crucial role in my analysis of Shoshoni
phonology, so I tend to view sibilants through a [strident] lens.
