No, I know exactly what you mean. One definitely doesn't imagine
the number of the subject/object as being the determining factor
between lexemes, usually. I was wondering if, though, the data
argued for such an interpretation. I was trying to think of a similar
example in another language, but all I could come up with is eat/feed
vs. dark/darken, and that doesn't quite work the same way.
(Causation certainly seems more semantic than number...) Oh
well. It is a fascinating system!
