I've been playing around with half a dozen different versions of Lindiga
spelling, none of them in particular much better than the current one. But
then I noticed that, even though I have /r/+C clusters, I don't have any
clusters with /r`/ as the first element followed by a dental or alveolar
consonant; it's always between vowels or after consonants, with the
marginal exception of /tsir`Ek/, stem /tsir`g/- "circumflex accent mark".
And since it isn't possible to double /r`/ (you could lengthen it, but then
you'd end up with /d`/), I can write /r/ as {rr} and /r`/ as {r} without
ambiguity! Then the digraphs with {r}- can stand for the retroflex sounds:
{rt}, {rd}, {rn}, {rs}, {rz}, and {rl}. For /K`/, which was already written
with a digraph {t^l^}, I'll probably have to use 3 or more letters to write
it, unless I use one of the unused letters like {q} (ugh) for /K/. I lose
the distinction between /r/ and /rr/, unless I want to write {rrr}, but
that's less of a change than some of the others I've been considering.
The name of the language, /z`i"l_din`d`iNa/, would be "rzi-lirnrdinga" with
this system. But since clusters involving /n/ or /n`/ must be homorganic, I
can leave out one of the r's and write "rzi-lirndinga", which I think looks
better. And "I am a jelly doughnut", /kam karu pEl`i:n_da/, turns out as
"kam karru perliena". Still, I'm not entirely satisfied with spellings like
"rsrroga" for /s`rOGa/ "color".
Now, if I use {ng} for /N/, the only accented characters I'll need are {é}
and {ó}!
