The drink was developed at the University of Florida in Gainesville,
designed to be a very efficient (re)hydrating formula, specifically
for use by their athletes, esp. the football team. The university
mascot name is the "Florida Gators" - and " 'gator" is, indeed, short
for "alligator", which Florida is known for.
