As a teacher with ample experience in teaching university-level basic English
composition in American universities, I can say the texts I have used
regularly explain and do exercises with phrasal verbs, but they do not use the term
"verbal particle" at all, and they refer to the word that accompanies the verb
in a phrasal verb as a preposition. I do not know whether this is true of all
texts used in American schools, but it is true of the ones I have worked with.
