From what I have heard, Arabic does this, at least with place names, and
Tolkien's Sindarin has a similar system. It is quite plausible. English
might develop such a system soon (well, not quite soon; perhaps 1000
years).
Ah, language has skewed my view of time. But if it's beyond my lifetime,
what matter if it's a day or a hundred years? The days go slowly, but the
