"Stinks" sounds a little harsh. It's a written form. I wouldn't say a written article "stinks" of the passé simple. Frankly, I like the above sentence. Conversational, no, but I like the way it sounds to my ears. Call it stylistic flourish. Biiru o nomi, karokebokksu ni ikimashita. Having beered up, we went to a karyoky (shudder) establishment (where we spent untold amounts of money on a bag of wasabi peas and off-key singing). Kou
