Much the same reason why Iranists (scholars of Iranian lgs that is) use
beta gamma delta and theta for fricatives.  Rather nice looking IMHO,
especially since all Iranian words are by convention printed in italics!

Actually I like the look of the look of traditional Greek typography,
and much prefer it over Roman (I prefer Italic shapes over Roman too for that
matter so I for one like the TeXian concept of upright italics...)  During
my Highschool* years I even wrote Swedish with Greek letters, and I have
made up a Greek-letter orthography for Quenya for purely aesthetic reasons!

OTOH I ground my teeth on those occasions when I had to use the
Greek-fricative
expedient for Germanic material.  And bad karma for Jaeschske for using gamma
for Tibetan prefixed {g} -- utterly pointless.
