I'm from the southeast of England, and I'm of the opinion that if it's an
animal, and is not otherwise readily identifyable as a non-bug (mammal,
bird, reptile or amphibian), it's pretty much a bug, unless I know a more
specific name for it. Sometimes, even then, it's still a bug.
OTOH, I agree on the "disease" thing. More specifically, an infectious
disease would probably be the defining characteristic to me.
