Well, that's comforting to hear! As that 'IIRC' indicates, I not positive anyone actually said it was [s\]. I might've misunderstood something, or dreamt it up. That's not to say I can't find references that say that 'sh' is [C] (again due to Swedish allophony, I guess - if you're told your [S] is [C], you're likely to think that Japanese [S] is too), while Mark Rosenfelder describes 'j' in _gajin_ as a "dental affricate" in his article on chance resemblances ... Andreas
