There's a story on the BBC site about a village named "Lunt" that is
considering a name change due to vandals who mark up signs to change
the L to a C.

Roight. Very funny, ha ha ha. But my question relates to this line:
"One suggestion is to change it to Launt which would be pronounced the same. "
It would? Really? And how is that, exactly?
I would pronounce "Lunt" as /lVnt/, /lUnt/, or /lunt/. I'd pronounce
"Launt" as /lOnt/ or /launt/. I can't come up with any pronunciation
that makes sense for both spellings...
