I know exactly what you are talking about. I got the same thing when I
moved some files from Microsoft Works into Word 2000. I think that's your
formatting info: you will have lost any formatting, fonts etc that you used.

You could check that by trying to open it again in WP8.
The ONLY reason I can think of is that you did indeed move it from one
program to another, and all your formatting and fonts were transformed into
a lot of boxes and ÿÿÿÿÿ. Which is harmless, but not pretty. But if you
did not move it like that, then the file could actually be damaged, and
could be on the verge of becoming irretrievably corrupted (like my goddamn
lexicon). Make a backup now while you still can!
