Not surprising. I should think that one could find Americans from every
state (that existed at the time) on both sides (yet another reason why
"War Between The States" is an unreasonable name, though "Civil War"
has its problems too).
Indeed, at least eight whole counties unofficially seceded from the
Confederacy at the time, declaring their neutrality in the ongoing
unpleasantness. The most famous of these is probably Winston County,
Alabama, aka "The Free State of Winston", which voted against secession
and forcibly resisted the conscription of its citizens into the
Confederate Army.
