As a child, I, too, used to read selected entries from encyclopedias.
Unfortunately they were (are?) an idea which sounds good on the surface but
which often serve only to promote selected prejudices.
I can remember one entry in Compton's Encyclopedia in the 1960's describing
African pigmies as suffering from insufficient growth hormone, and
suggesting that they'd be bettered if "we" took them and treated their
"condition" with injections of same.
