The primary discovery which leads to modern verse is that there is a
third basic rhythm in literature besides verse-proper (formal rhythm)
and prose (semantic rhythm), namely free association.
I'll write up the details sometime when I get a chance, or check
out Northrop Frye's _The Well-Tempered Critic_, which is very
accessible.
