I don't have any schwas in my language. I have [I], [i-] (in things like
"roses") and [V]. So, "alienation" is [ejlijI4~eSIn] and t'other is
[ejlijIneSIn]. Also, if I were to prolong the word "alien" in "alien nation"
(such as if I were singing along with the Scorpions' song "Alien
Nation"--song 1, Face the Heat), I would prolong that [I] and make it a [V],
so it would become [ejlijV:neSVn]. Oh, and all the [l]'s are velarized--I'm
so confused that I really don't know whether I'm supposed to write [L] or [5]
or [l_g] or [L\] or whatever. In fact, I just don't care. Unless we get
into a discussion about liquids in English, it's just going to be [l] for me.
But, yeah, they're definitely a minimal pair pour moi.
