i think i got something...
in japanese 'su' syllabe, especially at the end sounds like syllabic 's'
'shi' usually sounds 'sh'
(shi.chi.ji [sh.chi.ji])
'tsu' - 'ts'
(many -u ending syllabes lost that u...)
etc.
