It has been done! In fact many composers in recent years have being
working with all sorts of pentatonic scales - Equal, Unequal, Just
Intonation, Non-Equal/Non-Just, etc. ad infinitum besides pentatonic scales
from all over the world
(pentatonic scale tuning systems are the most numerous).
