In high-school, a friend of mine and I used to pass notes this way. We
never formally agreed on the phonetic mappings, but just being familiar
with the Russian values of the graphs made formal agreement a non-issue.
It was a wonderful way of passing messages- even when intercepted, the
notes were assumed to be in Russian (which neither one of us knew, or
apparently anybody else in our classes), and no attempts were made at
deciphering them...
