Though I no longer live with a wife or child or dog or cats, I still use the
captions (except "live captioning") whenever possible, because I don't want to
wake up the neighbors and also don't want to have to rewind to understand
dialog I missed.
But like Heinrich I find that watching the captions can take attention away
from the action more than I like.
So what I do if I have time is watch it twice, once with captions and once
without.

Actually, if it's been dubbed in languages I "understand" (sort of) and
captioned in languages I (kind of) understand, and I have time, I watch it in
those, too. Usually it's been dubbed in fewer languages than it's been
captioned in.
If I have _plenty_ of time I'll watch it in English with French or German or
Spanish (or Tamil or Hindi or Russian, I guess) or whatever subtitles; and in
French or German or Spanish (or Tamil or Hindi or Mandarin or Russian, I guess)
(whichever are available --- usually only two or three languages, including
English, are available for audio) with English subtitles. If I really intend to stay
up late I'll watch it in French with Spanish subtitles and vice-versa.
