The same way I and another native English speaker were discussing Esperanto
pronunciation (online), and he was talking about how it is hard to say
consonant
clusters like n-g-t, and I thought I was showing my linguistic prowess by
saying
that |ng| is really only one sound, [N]. But I was being stupid, because in
Esperanto the cluster is actually pronounced -[ngt]-, and I had been
mispronouncing
it [N] the whole time. For some reason I had thought that [N] was the one
exception
to the "one letter-one sound" rule. Oh well.
