For me there is a faint difference - not as much of a difference as between "ä" and "e", but you can notice it if you listen concentratedly. "ei" sounds always [aI], but "ai" sounds more like [aj]. So, "Main" sound more like "Majn" than like "Mein", and "Saite" sounds more like "Sajte" than like "Seite".
