Probably by noticing that some symbols come back at
different places, especially if they are not very
simple ones (like a single stroke), and perhaps even
come back in a similar "context" ? If you see several
times something like "vi", for ex (God forbid), it
might be a clue that there can be some meaning in it,
although it is hard to know which one.
