Germanic *walh was a generic word for "foreigner", especially "southern
foreigner", and was applied to both Romans and Celts. Old English even had
the disambiguating compounds _rum-wealas_ and _bret-wealas_. There was/is
a somewhat obsolete/archaizing Swedish word _välsk_ "south-landish".
