Danish does that, too, for "what kind of X?" It had me fairly confused until I asked someone about the expression. Now I just use it naturally. Danish also has the exclamation "Hvad for noget!?" (literally "what for something") where English uses a simple "What!?" to express extreme surprise.

"The test on X" is probably a better alternative. Isidora
