Back in the days of typewriters, US linguists used the trema (if they had a
European machine) or backspace/double-quote for just that purpose: ï = high
unround _back_ , ë = mid unround back, just as ü was high round _front_ etc.
It still makes sense to me :-)))

My choice; and ä is fully acceptable for low front [&]. Plus, using the
dieresis is easier than hunting up a special character........
