I read LotR for the first time when I was about ten, in the old Dutch
translation that had only Appendices A and B. I got my very own
hardcover copy at fourteen, in London, beautiful books printed on
buff paper, and with *all* those appendices - great! I did feel a
little cheated, but I was already (at fourteen, not at ten) used to
good things lost in translation.

Whether it influenced my conlanging I don't know - there's little
about languages in Appendices A and B, and I started making up
countries and words about the same time that I started reading
Tolkien, so it may just have been that the ground was fertile anyway.
