Japanese has the first one, it's called the potential form: tabe-ru _to eat_ > tabe-rare-ru _to be able to eat_ yom-u _to read_ > yom-e-ru _to be able to read_ Isn't the second kind of like the construction: may + infinitive in english? Like: "I may go" = "I'm allowed to go" and the third is found in Sanskrit (I think), and Japanese kind of, where they are called desideratives or desiratives: Japanese: tabe-ru > tabe-ta-i _I want to eat_ > tabe-ta-gatte i-ru _He wants to eat_ yom-u > yom-i-ta-i _I want to read_ > yomi-ta-gatte i-ru _He wants to read_ Elliott
