Thanks a mill - so my ears are still working. It was quite the shock to hear
and [l] in <calm> and <palm> for the first time, so I thought I might have
imagined it. However, I, too, have different vowel phonemes in <palm> /pA:m/
and <talk> /tO:k/, which inmy NWEE (North Western English English) are
realised as [pa:m] and [tsQ:k].

"I'm a North American English speaker (of the Midwestern variety). I
pronounce the "l" in such words (I've never heard otherwise 'round these
parts)."
