That's what I've always thought, but many reliable authorities derive it
from Gk. eis tin polis 'to the city', Constantinople being the City par
excellence.
BTW the little town of Gallipolis Ohio is pronounced natively as if -polis
were "police" [-p@'liys], something I did not know before my brief sojourn
in the region. Presumably a holdover from French, not Greek,
pronunciation.......
