My 2 cents:
IIRC, Sefarad was one of the sons of some important character in
jewish/christian mythology (Old Testament, I mean). Don't know who, but
I'm pretty sure it's something like this :-)
The "sefardíes" ("Sefarad's people", I suppose) are the jews
that were thrown out of Spain in 1492. They still speak a tongue that
resembles very much the spanish of that era.
