Funny, I have the opposite experience - the Spanish-speakers I know use "tilde" generically to refer to all Spanish diacritical marks - not just the actual tilde over the n, but also the acute accent, and even the diaresis over the u when |gu| before e or i means /gw/ instead of just /g/, so "u con tilde" is somewhat ambiguous. -Marcos
