Swedish is about as consistent as German in this regard - in both languages,
the trema typically indicates an i-umlauted vowel, but it's easy enough to find
words where the trema'd vowel isn't historically umlauted, but used to indicate
a particular pronunciation (eg the French loans in Swedish in _-ör_, from
French _-eur_).
