AFMCL, the Thagojian alphabet (not the syllabary) has made a similarly bad bastardisation of the trema, using it to mark asyllabic vowels (rather than a syllable boundary), and has at the same time, through some quirk of scribal method, turned it into a circumflex symbol. I haven't yet figured out the native term for this diacritic, but I suspect it will remain cognate with "diaeresis". Here, I curse my non UTF-8 mail client for not allowing me to paste an example.
