With German umlauts (äöü), both is equally bad, as an umlaut can totally change the meaning of a word. Examples: lugen: to look stealthily from a hiding place lügen: to tell a lie Mose: the guy with the ark from the Bible Möse: a nasty word for the female genitalia arger: worse Ärger: trouble You see, leaving out the umlaut dots is a *very* bad idea! It always really irks me when I see some English speakers writing "uber" or "doppleganger" (instead of "über" and "doppelgänger"). -- Pascal A.
