Indeed, although the phonology of Mandarin is constructible in several
ways, one scheme reads it as having only /@/ and /a/ and zero,
plus three glides /w/ and /j/ and /y<glide>/ (I forget the ASCII IPA
for this, but it's inverted h in real IPA).
