I was thinking more in the sense of non-academic purposes. Like you say, names of persons and places in newspaper articles, etc.

Well, the reason i do it is because many have taken to getting all "tibetan on my ass", and think they're so knowledgeable about it because they've glanced at Tibetan buddhism, or get tattoos in Tibetan.So, it brings me much pleasure to let them know they really don't have a clue at all. I do have a book on Tibetan Thangka painting that has an appendice of the various terms and how to pronounce them (of course not in IPA style)
