I made a very detailed map some years ago when I was unemployed. But
I'm not sure if I rely 100% on it any more. It's only on paper, but I
was planning to publish a webpage after the publication of my novel.
However now I don't know when that will be.
Brief historical outline:
A modestly rich megalithic culture was followed by a prosperous
bronze age when the country benefited from the unusually rich copper
deposits in the southeast. The Urianian invasions signalled a dark
age, but the Urianians later built a high civilisation of their own.
However it had declined when the Viking invasions began, and the
country fell in foreign hands. The Norse tongue, developing into a
distinct language called Azurian, spread from the southeast to the
fertile lowlands in the south and west with the new landowners. The
Danish king sold the southernmost part to his Scottish counterpart in
1469, making sure that the border went just south of the copper
mines. Eventually the majority language there became English. The
Danish province was given the name Azuria. The Urianians resisted
mainly in the northeastern highlands, but were subdued in the 17th
century, after which the country was slowly danified. The romantic
age however brought new nationalist sentiments, and an academy was
founded in the highland town Uria in 1833. A rebellion in 1849 was
crushed when troops were sent in 1851 and a two-year war ensued. I
have detailed notes about this episode. The southern region also
struggled for independence, which it eventually gained partially in
1917 taking the name Uriania for historical reasons. And finally on
Aug. 13, 1934, the country was united when a half-fascist movement in
Azuria managed to come to an agreement with Denmark. The details
about all this and later events are rather florid and i have stuff
for many novels, if I could only get anyone to read them...
